RIGHT HEMISPHERE

Welcome to Right Hemisphere

The place where celebrating creativity comes as second nature

Right Hemisphere, are three passionate artists, creating in a number of genres and mediums. We are; Annabel Barry, Nicola Osborne and Tina Robertson

We are keen to exhibit our work to as wide an audience as possible. With that in mind, we have decided to create our own opportunities

Our aim is to celebrate the work of local artists, who create in a variety of media

Frustrated with a lack of venues and chances to exhibit, we have decided to do something about this, arranging an exhibition, alongside invited local artists:

We look forward to being able to share future developments with you, so stay tuned

WHO ARE WE?

Annabel Barry

Annabel  makes mixed media sculptures, creating her artwork in her South Essex Studio in Westcliff on Sea.

Annabel’s process

Working predominantly with wire and paper mache, Annabel, creates sculptures of animals, flowers and other objects. In these sculptures, she is expressing her love of form, colour and nature. They are objects of exploration, that will last a lifetime.
A sculpture starts with an idea and evolves through design, construction, painting and finishing before becoming what she hopes is an interesting and tactile object. Working intuitively, each piece starts with an initial outline made from robust wire. Annabel then continues to add thinner, flexible wire to stabilise what she is working on, creating more detail. Eventually a recognisable shape is formed. It can take her a few hours of fiddling about with the wire until suddenly there is a magic moment when the piece begins to finally evolve and take on a personality of its own.

Annabel’s use of the armature or structure of the sculpture becomes a part of the finished form. Her considered use of paper mache, fills some of the negative space, allowing the viewer to ‘fill in the gaps’ for themselves.

Nicola Osborne

Nicola is a mixed media painter, creating from her home studio in Benfleet.

She studied Illustration at KIAD.

After her degree, she qualified as an art teacher and taught art for 20 years. Nicola is working as a full-time artist.

Nicola’s process

Nicola is an intuitive painter. She enjoys the unexpected, emerging shapes and marks evolve the of variety of mediated. Nicola mainly works in acrylic inks and acrylics.

Her work is often, based on the natural world, focusing on colour and its effects on the viewer. An emotional reaction to the arrangement of opaque and translucent hues and pigments, is what she strives to achieve.

Nicola employs the language of overlapping and intersecting forms created in layers and glazes of multiple media. Her intention is to promote a sense a of intricacy and other worldliness.

Her paintings are firmly rooted in the connection to location. The nearby estuary landscape and its flora are the foundation of artistic exploration Using repetition of symbols and geometric shape, an abstract world is formed.

Tina Robertson

Tina is a self-taught, mixed-media artist, working in a variety of styles, from her home studio.

Tina’s process

Generally working in acrylic paint, applied with a palette knife, spray paint and Posca pens, Tina creates bold, bright and dynamic images. She also makes striking soft pastel and ink/acrylic illustrations.

As an intuitive painter, Tina enjoys the immersive freedom that these materials give her. Mark-making evolves naturally through her process, along with strong and painterly elements. Her, work is quirky, striking and far from conventional.

Her subject matter is the female form, inspiration coming from the inner strength and beauty of women.

Tina celebrates an alternative view of beauty. Her mark-making and semi-abstraction, seeks to convey, that perceived imperfection is beautiful. We should not strive incessantly for outward beauty, but embrace our ‘flaws’ and ‘imperfections’.

WHAT WE DO

As experienced exhibitors, we are aware of how difficult it is to show work to new audiences.

Engaging audiences has never been harder, even in the age of a myriad of social media platforms.

It is our aim to showcase creativity in as many people and as many ways as possible.

We are not a platform for selling directly to collectors.

We are about connecting creatives and collectors through exhibitions and experiences.

We believe this will promote a healthy artistic community, encouraging long term relationships.

DOMINION: the other SUMMER exhibition, will be the first in Right Hemisphere’s events. An exhibition in a domestic setting.

Exhibiting Artists 2025

Alison Bournes

Instagram: tin_roof_studio_essex

What Alison says about her work.

I enjoy working with the theme of the human condition, often choosing to work in clay as it is such a responsive medium.
The human figure, human stories and historical information often inform my work, I enjoy exploring the light and shade of lives lived.
I am self-taught and over the past 10 years have exhibited my work in London, Kent, Essex and Suffolk. I work in a small home studio in Essex where I also teach ceramic skills on a one to one basis.
Some of my work is held by Southend Museums and Historic England and I am a member of The Thames Group of Artists.

Rebecca Coleman

Instagram: bec.art1980

Rebecca is an abstract painter living and working from her home studio in Leigh. Known for creating bold, hard-edge, geometric works, her work is inspired by the vivid images evoked by music, nature and the surrounding environment. Rebecca has exhibited locally for many years and participates in the annual Leigh Art Trail.

Natasha Davis

Instagram: natashadavisart

What Natasha says about her work:

I am a self-taught linocut artist, based in Hadleigh, Essex. As well as being an artist printmaker leading printmaking workshops, I am also a full-time mum and part-time teacher. Each print begins as a meditative carving – I love the rhythmic process of cutting lino and how it offers a calming escape from my hectic, everyday life. Through my art, I hope to capture the surreal, the everyday, and the deeply personal. My more recent work explores the interplay between nature, whimsy and human emotion, often weaving storytelling elements into my pieces.

Julia Hart

Instagram: julestwoharts

Julia Hart is a mixed media artist working in inks, acrylics, watercolours, & print media.

Based in Benfleet, Essex she finds the everchanging views, light & landscape of the Estuary a constant source of inspiration. She is also greatly inspired by animals, photographs, myths, poetry, art processes and concepts.

Whatever the subject it is always through the prism of colour. Her work is largely impressionistic as she seeks to create the emotional response a subject can generate.

Julia has been a (mostly) self-taught artist for seven years. Recently, attending a Print (Etching) course at the Royal Drawing School, London.

Julia is now delighted in 2025 to work from a studio at HOFS. Visitors are very welcome – just contact her for a time you would like to visit.

Theo Hennessy

Instagram: theohennessy.art

Theo Hennessy is a traditional artist. His medium is primarily ink and brush pen which he uses to create detailed illustrations. His work explores themes of mysticism, fantasy, the supernatural and the mythological amongst others. Strange creatures and characters live in the vivid worlds he creates on paper. Surreal and abstract faces are also a common theme.

Bronwyn Oldham

Instagram: bronwynoldhamphotography

Bronwyn Oldham lives in the estuary town of Leigh-on-Sea and is an avid, floral fine art photographer, as well as an enthusiastic gardener, trying, where possible, to cultivate & grow the flowers she photographs from seed or bulb.

She studied a combined Media & Analogue Photography BA Hons Degree at De Montfort University, back in the early nineties; a time when the medium of photography had yet to undergo the complete digital revolution of recent years. Then in 2000, she decided to re-train, discovering the new wonderful techniques and endless possibilities of digital photography to further liberate her practice.

Heavily influenced by the paintings of the late twentieth century American painter, Georgia O’Keefe, as well renowned photographers such as the late Robert Mapplethorpe & Imogen Cunningham, Bronwyn uses camera techniques such as a soft focus and short depth of field, with a combination of digital edit software, to develop a more painterly effect within her work.

She is a regular exhibitor in The Leigh Art Trail; has work in private
collections across the world and gained her Licentiateship from The Royal Photographic Society in 2012.

Vadims Pjatrikovs

Instagram: vadims_pjatrikovs

What Vadims’ says about his work:

My work exists at the intersection of surrealism and abstraction, with nature serving as a recurring theme in many of my pieces. I am fascinated by the interplay between the organic world and the abstract, and my paintings often blend dreamlike compositions with non-representational forms, creating visual narratives that challenge the boundary between the real and the surreal.

Mike Slade

Turned wooden sculptures

Instagram: michaelsladewoodart

Michael Slade Wood Art started in 2020 and features individual artisan hand crafted wooden pieces created in my workshop in Westcliff. I hand turn items on the lathe and craft items by hand using a variety of techniques so every item I make is unique. Wherever possible I use locally sourced materials which have been selected for their quality and sustainability. I enjoy breathing new life into old wood, and I frequently recycle wood that would otherwise be burnt or disposed of to create something completely new which has purpose and is pleasing to the eye.

Nicola Upton

Estuary View #3

Instagram: mrsmosaiclos

What Nicola says about her work

My mosaic works celebrate the coastal landscapes of South East England, with a particular focus on the estuaries. Each mosaic piece is inspired by the textures, light, beauty and drama of this ever-changing sea and shoreline.

The work invites viewers to contemplate the subtle strength and resilience of this vast landscape, experiencing its varying moods through the choice of colour and material. My journey as an artist is one of continuous exploration and appreciation of the ebbs and flows of the river, and the land it shapes.

Gill Whitehead

Instagram: gill.whitehead

What Gill says about her work

I am predominantly self-taught, having received no formal art training but gain plenty of inspiration and knowledge from the interesting courses and demos I attend.
My home studio is in Thorpe Bay where I am lucky to be close to the Estuary which provides me with fabulous views for my mixed media collages. I enjoy spontaneity, seeing what develops along the way. My aim is to capture light, colour and texture with a variety of papers, paints, inks and pastels, adding subtle text to catch the eye.. I create ethereal watercolours in a similar way but these are from my imagination. The unpredictability of the medium provides shapes which I alter and merge until happy with the outcome.
In complete contrast, and in a method which takes much concentration, I draw detailed pastel and charcoal portraits of people and animals. I aim to capture character and enjoy the challenge this way of working provides.
